February 2015

Greetings from your committee.

New Lease Signed: We are pleased to report that a new lease was finally signed by all parties on the 8th May 2014 with a commencement date of 21 February 2013 and with a final expiry date of 3 June 2022. This gives us security of tenure for another eight years. The rent has been set at a peppercorn rent of $1 per annum down from $500 in previous years. This is an excellent result and the committee thanks all those members who made submissions of support.

The AGM was held on 30th March 2014. The committee remains unchanged from the previous year and the position of patron is still vacant. The membership subscription is to remain at $20 per person for this year.

New “Tool Shed” Exhibit: Bob Anderson and Arnie Aretz have constructed a fine farm toolshed in the main museum to display our collection of tools from yesteryear. They built the toolshed around an old kauri workbench from the old Kennedy Farm complete with a full-size working vice. Also on display are some old kerosene tins in wooden cases that were used in many garden sheds for storage. The shed’s window depicts a Whakanewha scene painted by Danielle Fillion in the Reverse Glass Painting method. The Shed could give pride of place to some of your old, now rarely used tools you may wish to donate.

New Computer: We received a generous donation from New Hope Op Shop allowing us to purchase a new computer. Keen to recycle, the old computer has been loaded with all of our photo archive and installed in the museum for visitors to browse through. A new Archive of Waiheke School Records has also been added.

New “Great Fire of 1997” Display: We discovered some remains having come through the 1997 old Woolshed fire and have assembled them together with photos and labels in a new display documenting the disastrous loss.

Model of the Lena: We have been loaned a model of the Lena, a scow built in Auckland in 1915 and which capsized off Waiheke on 15 May 1957 with the loss of six lives.

Forthcoming events:

A note for your diaries: The AGM has been scheduled for Sunday 12th April at 2pm at the Museum. Further details will be advertised in the Gulf News. Thank you in advance for your continued support for the Museum and Historic Village. We wish you a safe and happy year.

A reminder that membership subscriptions are due by the AGM on 12th April 2015.

In the interest of saving our precious funds, no membership cards will be printed this year but receipts will be issued when subscriptions are renewed if requested.
