Waiheke Island Choral Society
Committee Meeting Minutes 7 July 2012
at Andy & Maya Spence’s house
Meeting opened at 6:00 PM.
Present: Andy Spence, Lyn Kemeys, Mark James, Maya Spence, Philip Symonds, Richard Melville
The Mikado post-mortem
The show was successful in terms of crowds and income.
Smaller theatres are OK for a show like The Mikado but low seating capacity would be inadequate to cover expenses for a grand-right show such as Broadway or East End musicals.
Even Artworks capacity is barely adequate.
Richard: Look at high school theatre; can seat 200-300. Acoustics are poor but the show could be miked, as they are in town.
Advertising, news articles, posters and leaflets were all very effective this year.
Treasurer’s report
At present we are $3260 in the black for The Mikado, but there are still outstanding bills to come for Artworks and the return of the costumes.
We should also be receiving a $500 refund of costume deposit.
All told the show should make about $3000.
Expenses submitted for approval (moved Philip, second Richard, passed unanimously):

End-of-year concert
Mozart: Great Mass in C minor, plus Credo Mass
Probably last two weeks in November
Two concerts at St Peters in Oneroa, Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon
Perhaps more concerts in town, maybe at Anglican Church
Richard to line up soloists; piano accompaniment by Robert Wiremu or Reg Towers; perhaps other instruments as well.
Mark to write article for papers emphasising that we need singers, especially sopranos.
Andy: Use Facebook to seek singers as well.
Richard: Great Mass requires a strong soprano section. If we don’t get more sopranos, it’s not worth doing. Need to decide by end of July.
Richard/Harriet to approach Sing Waiheke, Sister Shout, V12, Canto Isola.
Next year’s show
Carmina Burana as a stage show, not just as a concert; it’s more like a ballet.
Philip to try to interest Kathy Ogletree and/or Tristan Glendenning.
Invite all other island choral groups to participate (like with the Messiah).
Target date: July 2013.
Needs a children’s choir for part of it. Harriet C might approach elementary school music teachers. (They sang with Sister Shout recently.)
If we get children and/or Kathy Ogletree involved, we should do at least two weekends with six performances; otherwise two or three is about all we could expect to fill.
Next meeting Tuesday 24 July at 6PM (before rehearsal) at Whittakers.
Short meeting Tuesday 31 July at 6:30 PM for a go/no-go decision regarding Mozart.
